Africancitizenswatch.org is a platform seeking to enhance the quality of democracy in different countries across #africa and contribute towards improved state delivery. This online tracking tool provides real-time information about the policy performance of the government. Through this process, non-state actors have evidence that can help enhance their participation in public policy processes and provide citizens with meaningful opportunities to identify their needs and priorities and give feedback on government performance. This is a precondition for inclusive societies. Through the tracker, we seek to highlight the following about democracy: 1- Free and fair elections are a necessary but not sufficient condition for democracy 2- Active citizens are essential and play a critical part in nurturing democracy The work of democracy is the work of citizens 3- Officeholders serve at the pleasure of citizens

Democracy Works Foundation (DWF) hosted The Southern Africa Regional Symposium themed: Moving Beyond The Rhetoric: The Role of Regional Economic Communities and Normative Frameworks in advancing democratic governance and Electoral Integrity in Southern Africa. This significant initiative aimed to address critical challenges in advancing democratic governance and electoral integrity in the region, focused on the role of Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and normative frameworks, particularly those outlined in the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG), in promoting democratic values. The Symposium's three main objectives were to 1. Raise awareness and share knowledge about the AU and SADC norms on advancing democratic governance and electoral integrity. 2. Facilitate peer-to-peer learning on civic technologies, acknowledging the evolving role of technology, including social media and digital tools, in enhancing citizen engagement, strengthening democratic processes, and ensuring electoral integrity. 3. Identify mechanisms for advocacy and engagement by establishing meaningful collaborations essential for promoting democracy and good governance in Southern Africa. In this video DWF Regional Director, Dr Augustine Magolowondo, unpacks this unique gathering where political actors, civil society, African Union & SADC stakeholders collaborated to chart a path for moving beyond the rhetoric 🤝 The Symposium was hosted under the auspices of the Political Parties for Resilient and Inclusive Democracies in Southern Africa Programme and the Charter Project Africa, implemented by DWF.
